Life at Westgate is so much more than just the lessons!

We are proud to offer an exciting variety of extra-curricular activities, helping our pupils to uncover their passions, expand their horizons and become well-rounded individuals.

Whether learning an instrument, taking part in a school performance, representing the school at sport, or something else entirely, we are confident every pupil will find an extra-curricular activity they love at our school.

 

Performing arts

At Westgate, we view music and the performing arts as the great connector.

Music and Drama are woven into our school life and we know that performing together has many benefits for children, teaching them skills like listening to each other, effective communication, working together as a group and developing language.  Performing Arts are also a really enjoyable thing to be involved in, with proven benefits for enhancing mental health. 

Our youngest pupils in Early Years start a performance journey with us through performing their Christmas Nativity and learning a wealth of songs, rhymes and stories.  There are also plenty of opportunities for our youngsters to discover more about the world around them through role play. 

These skills are developed throughout the school and encouraged through the curriculum and special days, such as Lancaster Music Festival in Year 2, Christmas Carol Concerts, our KS2 Music Afternoons and our annual Year 6 Pantomime.  

We're proud to offer a range of musical extracurricular activities at Westgate, including:

Recorders
Years 3 receive weekly recorder lessons through a specialist music teacher. As well as this, small group tuition takes place before school for those who would like to take their learning further. We also have the opportunity for individual or small group tuition across key stage 2.

Choir   
The school has an active choir in key stage 2 that sings together weekly and take opportunities to perform in public. This year, they performed at our annual KS2 Music Afternoon and visited a local care home to spread some Christmas cheer!

Rocksteady
We have a termly performance from our children who take part in ‘Rocksteady’. These develop their own musical skills whilst working collaboratively to create a band!

Sport

Sport plays a central part in life at Westgate, helping our pupils to stay fit and healthy.

We provide every pupil with the opportunity to take part in a broad range of sports and physical activities that often go beyond the standard curriculum.  Our fantastic outdoor space with our Multi Use Games Area gives us lots of scope for PE lessons, lunchtime activities and after school clubs.  Inter-schools sports competitions allow us to learn more about the activities we enjoy, as well as giving better insight into the values of teamwork, resilience and good sportsmanship.  

We welcome pupils of all levels and abilities; sport is about having fun, staying fit and being part of a community.

Trips

Our pupils expand their horizons with a rich programme of trips and excursions outside school.

School trips are an important part of the children's learning and help them to gain a deeper understanding of the topics which they are studying, whilst creating fantastic memories that will stay with them throughout the lives.  

Classes can expect to participate in one main trip per term, but also regularly head out to explore the local area including the nearby parks, shops and for walk-abouts in the community. 

Recently, our pupils have create Stone Age axes at St Catherine’s Wood, explored nature at Martin Mere and learnt about agriculture and farming at Heave’s Farm.

To enhance our pupils' learning we make full use of local amenities such as Happy Mount Park, Morecambe Beach and Lancaster city centre and welcome visitors into the school to talk about a variety of topics, with Electricity North West and Animal Care being particular highlights over the past few years. 

Children across school also look forward to their annual adventure days when they tackle challenges and demonstrate resilience together whilst hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and gorge walking.

Having prepared throughout school, the children then build independence and resilience by staying away from home in York in Year 5 and the Isle of Man trip in Year 6. This means they leave Westgate ready for the world ahead of them!
